Basement bathrooms
Basement shower installation is the least forgiving thing in a finished basement, because there is no floor underneath for a leak to announce itself through.

There is no room below to reveal a failure. A shower on the first floor announces a leak as a stain on a ceiling within weeks. A basement shower leaks into the slab and the framing and stays hidden for years, by which point the repair is structural rather than cosmetic.
That is why the membrane, not the tile, is the part worth paying for.
A bonded sheet or liquid membrane over the substrate, with seams and corners sealed and the drain integrated into the membrane rather than sitting beside it. Done properly it is one continuous waterproof surface with no reliance on tile or grout to keep water out.
The older mud-bed and liner method still works when it is built correctly. Where it goes wrong is at the corners and the drain flange, and down here you will not find out for a long time.
The wet walls get cement board or a foam backer with a membrane. Moisture-resistant drywall is not a tile backer and does not belong behind a shower.
A shower drain sits lower than a toilet or a sink, which makes it the hardest fixture to serve below grade. If the sewer line leaves below the slab this is straightforward. If it leaves above, the slab usually has to be broken and the drain run underneath to a low tie-in, because a standard ejector basin sits too high to take a shower by gravity in many layouts.

A shower puts a lot of moisture into a windowless room. The fan has to be sized for the space and ducted outside on its own run with a backdraft damper. An undersized or badly ducted fan is how you get mold in a brand new bathroom.
