Everything overhead gets sprayed the same colour. Joists, ductwork, pipes, wiring, the underside of the subfloor above. Usually a dark charcoal or matte black, sometimes white in a space that needs all the light it can get.

The trick is that one colour stops your eye separating the individual objects. Instead of reading as a mess of pipes it reads as a single dark plane with texture in it, and the eye moves on. It works better in person than it does in photographs.

Prep is the whole job. Spraying is fast, but everything that is not being painted has to be masked, and in a basement that means the panel, the furnace, the water heater and every duct register. Decades of dust gets cleaned off the joists first, because paint will not hold on it.
