What a big-box install network is

A retailer's home services arm is a referral and management layer. You request a consultation, the retailer matches you with an independent contractor in its network, and that contractor does the work under the retailer's paperwork and warranty terms.

That model works cleanly for single-product installs. Flooring, doors, windows, a water heater. One trade, one visit, one clear scope, and the retailer already sells the product being installed.

A basement finish is not that. It is framing, electrical, plumbing, insulation, drywall, paint, flooring and trim, in a fixed order, with permits and inspections between stages. The coordination is most of the job.

The questions worth asking either way

Whoever you talk to, big box or local, the answers to these tell you what you are buying.

• Who pulls the permit, and does that person schedule the inspections?
• Is the estimate broken out by stage, or is it one number?
• Which parts are subcontracted, and to whom?
• Who do you call in month two when the framing inspection turns up a combustion air problem?
• What is the warranty on, the product or the installation?

That last one catches people. A product warranty from a manufacturer is not the same as someone standing behind the way it went in.

What matters more than the logo on the truck
